Scripture Cards Set

Hello there! Today I want to share with a gift I made for a friend using Eileen Hull's Recipe Card Box die (and others!) I'll also share an easy texturing technique using stencils, paste and Gelatos.


The cards are easily cut using the companion die, Recipe Card & Label. I formatted the Bible verses in a graphics program and printed them out to attach to the die cut cards. And the cards fit perfectly into the box!

Tip: use velcro or a magnetic closure to hold the box shut.
So, let's get on with how I put all that texture and color on there!

Step 1 – Cut the box out of mat board and mask any areas you are not going to apply texture to. Definitely mask any glue tabs; I also decided I wanted the side panels clear because I was going to apply patterned paper to them. I just used washi tape to mask off the area. Make sure it is low tack. Post-It notes work well too!


Step 2 – Because of the smaller size of my stencil, I had to apply the Texture Paste in two parts. Using a fold line as a boundry, I applied the paste through the stencil using a palette knife.


Once it was dry, I could apply the paste to the rest of the box and let it all dry.


Step 3 – Applying the color is the fun part! I first misted it with Spray Distress Stain and plenty of water to get the colors to blend. Once it was dry, I lightly applied different colors of Gelatos to the textured areas. Then I wet my finger and used it to blend the colors. After that all dried, I sealed it with a coat of DecoArt Media Ultra Matte Varnish, working it into the nooks and crannies.


This box is super easy to put together. Just bend at the score lines and either glue the tabs with a strong, quick-grabbing glue or use a strong dry adhesive like Red Line Wonder Tape. I added a magnetic closure and embellished the box with other Eileen Hull diecuts.

Mixed Media Madness – ATC binder cover

Hello everyone! I finally got to a project I've had in mind for a few months now. I've been trading a lot of ATCs over the past six months and they are just filling up a box. I've been wanting to get them organized into a binder but I knew it couldn't just be an ordinary binder. What fun is that? I found a three-ring binder at the thrift store that had a paper instead of plastic covered cover and knew that would be the perfect surface to practice some mixed media madness on. I probably should have taken some in-progress photos but I was having too much fun to stop in the middle. ;-)


It was a black binder so I first coated the raw cover with black gesso as a primary layer. Once dry, I adhered a linen doily misted blue to it and used a stencil with black modeling paste to add texture over it all. I also added some misting with the DecoArt Media Acrylic Misters (which are permanent) and a wash of Phthalo Green Blue in places. Then the fun of adding the graphics and embellishments began! The lily and frog images are from The Graphics Fairy. I printed them out with my Epson ink jet printer and gave them a coat of Ultra Matte Varnish to seal them before I glued them onto the cover. I glued on lace, diecuts, and metal embellishments and gave them a coat of white gesso before blending on various colors of Fluid Acrylics and Silks Acrylic Glazes. I also added clear glass micro beads for more shimmery texture.

Getting Crazy with the Compendium of Curiosites Challenge #3 – Altered Surfaces

I can't believe there is only one more CC challenge after this one! What a fun time it has been. Thank you Linda (at the Studio L3 blog) and the Curiosity Crew for hosting and inspiring us with all these wonderful challenges. All techniques come from the Tim Holtz book, A Compendium of Curiosities Vol. 3. This current challenge's technique is found on page 45 of the book. I can't share it, but I can tell you it's crazy fun! Speaking of crazy, have you seen all the fun new stamp sets that go with the popular Crazy Bird stamps? I got my hot little hands on them and the totally awesome Bird Crazy dies too and created a crazy fun birthday card for my youngest son:


His name is Jon (hence the "J") and he turned 9 (hence the "9"). These little crazy birds are all set to celebrate and wish him a happy birthday. ;-) This is what you call a loaded card. I'm glad I don't have to mail it – it is chunky and heavy! I altered the metal J, the foil tape covered scalloped border and the Alpha Parts 9.
