Mother's Day Card with Eileen Hull

Hello! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. It was warm and sunny here, downright hot! Of course the temperature is going to drop 30 degrees by the end of the week and rain is coming. That's okay though, it will be good for my garden. =) I made this card for my mother
-in-law using Eileen's dies and her NEW Molten Dimensions embossing powders from Emerald Creek. They are pretty fabulous!

They are chunky and you get really good coverage and dimension. I discovered that I can use my Melting Pot to easily make all the embossed die cut elements. (The Ranger Melting Pot was designed by Suze Weinberg and they were sadly discontinued a few years ago. You might have one in your craft stash already or be able to find one used on eBay etc.)

I die cut the flowers and word, inked them with Eileen's clear (super sticky!) Blends Ink, applied the powder and set it into the pre-heated pot to melt. (It doesn't take long!) I had these non-stick inserts with side flaps that were made to fit into the tray which made it really easy to remove the melted die cut. I just lifted the liner out and let it cool off to the side before handling it. You could do the same thing with a folded piece of foil or paper.

Super Card Team-Up with Eileen Hull

What happens when you combine Eileen Hull's new Book Club Ch. 2 collection, ColorBox Blends ink and DCWV paper? You get a super cool team-up that packs a punch! Check out this card I made:

Here are a few tips and tricks I used making the card and utilizing Eileen's ColorBox Blends inks. The Blends pigment inks contain about 10x more ink than a standard ink pad and come with a built in applicator.

Technique 1 – I first used the Hearts Journaling Card die to cut a stencil out of transparency film.

I stenciled a pattern of hearts through a circle mask I cut and onto the card base. The Blends applicator makes it super easy to stencil!

(The new Credit Card Sleeve Die has a separate slot piece so you can cut them wherever you want in the sleeve.)

Technique 2 - You can also use the Blends to create interesting backgrounds. Squish a quantity of ink onto your craft mat and then spritz with water. Drag and blot your paper through the ink to build up layers of splotchy goodness. I dried it in between layers.

More Clearsnap Blends from Eileen Hull

… and a closer look at a project from Creativations! All this month we've been taking a look at Eileen's ColorBox Blends from Clearsnap (check out all the fun projects on Eileen's blog if you've missed them). This is a project I made for Creativations using some of Eileen's new dies and the Blends ink for stenciling. (You can see my other Blends projects here and here.) I created a banner decor piece which I think is perfect for saying goodbye to winter with:

Isn't this cheerful? Eileen's new dies I used (coming soon to stores!) are the House/Pocket, Stitchy Flowers, and Stitchlits Words. Let's take a look:

The banner is cut from white cotton canvas material. I painted the background with watered down Distress Paint (Tumbled Glass and Twisted Citron). If I were redoing it, I could have made custom mists from the Blends inks (see how in my Mr. Owl tutorial) and used those on the background. The paint stiffens the fabric up a bit but the ink mist does not.

I used some of Wendy Vecchi's stencils (Layered Tree and Borders) and the Blends (Nutmeg, Frog and Hydranga)  to add the tree, hatched border on the bottom, and blue diamonds to the background. The Blends ink with its integrated sponge applicator makes it super easy to use for applying ink, especially through stencils.

Here is a detail of how I added the stitched words at the top of the banner. The Stitchlits Words die set is made up of individual word dies that you can use to cut anywhere on your project. It gives you holes that you can then easily stitch! I didn't have the actual die in my hands (Eileen sent us precut things to make show samples with) but that was not a problem. I used the cardstock with the diecut wording (on left) as a template and marked the dot positioning with a water erasable fabric pen. Then I just stitched with floss to connect the dots.

The house and flowers were cut out of wool felt (the dies cut felt wonderfully!) I stitched and glued all the little parts together and added extra decorative embroidery as well.

I used vintage buttons and lace from my stash to add more layers. The grass diecuts I stitched on with my sewing machine.

The hanger was easy to make with the Twist & Style Tool. I used about a yard of silver 24 gauge wire doubled up (I didn't have thicker wire on hand) and twisted it into a sturdy length I could bend into the hanger shape.

I colored the wire with Mushroom Alcohol Ink to age it.

I drilled two holes at the ends of a length of dowel to pass the ends of the wires through. I twisted the ends into loops so I could attach the ribbon tassels to them. At the center I formed a decorative loop to hang it from. Also, I used the Nutmeg Blends ink to stain the wooden dowel. Quick and easy!

Mr. Owl Clearsnap Blog Takeover

ColorBox Blends with Eileen Hull – Valentine Decor

Hello there! This month the Inspiration Team is focusing on Eileen's ColorBox Blends from Clearsnap - a unique (and convenient!) pigment ink that comes with a handy integrated sponge applicator and contains 10x the ink of a regular stamp pad. (The Make it Monthly Technique for February that Pam Bray shares is packed full of ways to use the Blends, check it out if you haven't already!) I've been very impressed by these inks, see what I made:

The vase and bird are all inked with the Blends - super easy! Take a look:

I pulled out three stencils with varying pattern sizes (including the Hearts of course). I started out with the largest pattern (a Stencil Girl stencil) and used pink (Tutu) to lay down a base pattern. I followed with the other stencils, using Flagstone and Stop Blends inks. There is no real right or wrong way to layer stencils. Just go for it and experiment! When using the Blends, I started with a light touch and built up the color intensity. If you press too hard with the sponges, you will activate the ink dispenser embedded in the sponge and get a big ink blob. Depress it onto your craft sheet to "recharge" the ink in the sponge.

I used the same technique to blend color onto the bird pieces (Flagstone and Wildberry). Use a light touch and build up the layers. I also used a Distress Marker (Hickory Smoke) and the Spritzer to add speckles to the bird. I glued the end of the twisted wire in between the two bird halves as I was assembling it.

Now for the flowers! I started by misting several white coffee filters with various colors of red and pink. I also sprayed some with Perfect Pearls mist for a touch of glimmer.

I used the Pansy Flower die to cut multiples of parts out of the stacks of filters. You can cut several at once with the steel ruled dies. I raided my button stash for flower centers and pulled the red wire out of my Christmas box.

The flower stems are easy to create with the Twist & Style Tool. (See Eileen's video for a full demo of the Tool.) Cut an 18" length of wire, fold it gently in half, and poke the ends through your button. Fasten the ends into the end of the Tool with the clamp (not the hook end). The button end goes over the center post in the suction clamp. Holding the wire taut, twist the tool and in moments you have a perfect flower stem. Thread the stem through your stack of flower parts and add some glue to the back to hold them all in place.

The coffee filters are thin like tissue paper so it's easy to fluff and crinkle the layers to give the flowers more volume. If you use cardstock and want to "fluff" them, try lightly misting with water and then manipulate the paper.

I cut a small piece of florist's foam to fit into the vase and covered it with a bit of cotton batting. Just poke the flower stems through the batting into the foam.
