Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge #19 – Frayed Fabric

It's time for another Compendium of Curiosities 3 challenge! This time the technique is Frayed Fabric as shown on page 66 of A Compendium of Curiosities, Vol.3 by Tim Holtz. You can play along too at the Studio L3 blog and see all the inspiring projects the Curiosity Crew made. Thanks also to Inspiration Emporium for sponsoring this challenge and offering a $50 prize to spend at the store! My project is also going to be a Valentine for my hubby. (Might as well get ahead on things! ;-)  ) I altered my last hoarded packaging piece from an old AOL mailer. You can see the other ones I did HERE and HERE.

When you open it up there is a little surprise:

And a close up:

I wanted lots of color and texture in the inside. I started out using Texture Paste and the Hearts stencil to lay down the first layer. After it was dry, I spritzed it with Spray Distress Stain and let that dry. I then applied Prima's Art Extravagance Clear Crackle Texture Paste in places over the top of the first layer. It did react a bit with the underlying stain because it is water based but I liked the look. When that was dry I added more color with Distress Paint, misting it well so it would blend and run into the nooks and crannies. It's fun to get messy!

I am also entering this in the Mixed Media Monthly Challenge "New to You". I tried a new technique (the Frayed Fabric), used a new die set I got for Christmas (Thinlits Labels), and the Art Extravagance Texture Paste is new to me (more experimentation forthcoming!) Be sure to check out their challenges – they are always lots of fun!

January Art with Heart Challenge – Fresh Ideas

Hello there everyone. Eileen Hull's January Art with Heart Challenge is up and running. We want to see your projects and you could win a new Vintage Kitchen 3-D Oven die! For my project I wanted to create something fresh and cheerful for a friend who is ill right now. I hope this will brighten up her room:

I used the Cookie Box die to make the container to hold the flowers. I cut it out of the Sizzles matboard which takes embossing and inking really well. I love building 3-D projects with that stuff! The flower centers are Gumdrops colored with alcohol ink (one single drop is all it takes). The sparkle is really nice on them, even when they have been colorized. Of course the Layered Butterfly makes a great backdrop and I liberally added Rock Candy Stickles to it for some subtle bling.

Check in at Eileen's blog each Tuesday to see what the Inspiration Team has been up to and grab some inspiration for yourself. See you over there!

CHA peek #3 for Eileen Hull's Vintage Travel line

Welcome back for the last day of peeks of Eileen Hull's new Vintage Travel line, available in April. I hope you are excited about the creative possibilities of what you have seen so far!

My last project is using the Tool Box die:

This is yet another super versatile die that can styled all sorts of different ways for different purposes (party favors anyone?) I used it as a little memento holder for a field trip we took to the tide pools. Look at all the fun things tucked inside:

More of the Inspiration Team is sharing what they made too. Be sure to go and check out their blogs. Come back and visit soon for more crafty inspiration!
