Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge #32 – Frosted Film

I can't believe I'm getting my challenge done so early this time! And I also can't believe we are nearing the end of the Compendium challenges! What a fun time it has been and chock full of artful inspiration. =) You can find the challenges over at the Studio L3 blog and this challenge is focusing on the Frosted Film technique as shown on page 59 of Tim Holtz's book, A Compendium of Curiosities Vol. 3. Frosted film is pretty amazing stuff! I can't share exactly what to do with it as per the challenge rules but check out the card I made for a friend's birthday:

I love the translucent layering! And because I used Karen Burniston's Accordion Rectangle Die, it opens up to this:

Isn't it cool? I will admit it was a bit tricky joining the panels together since I was basically gluing plastic. Glossy Accents works pretty well for the main frame tabs but the little tabs joining the center panels have too much pressure on them and they kept popping apart. I had to use eyelets to hold them. It's a "don't fold me up and put me in an envelope" kind of card. It's okay though, we were able to just give it to him and he can display it on a shelf. I think it's worth it for the cool effect. ;-)

Window to the Sea Artist Trading Cards

Last month I shared some ocean-themed steampunk ATCs and my plans to incorporate one of them into a Configurations Book. It's coming together in bits and pieces and I want to share another little "ATC" section today:

I love covering cardstock with foil sheets and embossing them (this is what I did with the Riveted Metal background). The design is really crisp. I aged it by covering it with Black Soot and Vintage Photo Distress paints and then wiping away most of it with a baby wipe. The paint stays in the nooks and crannies.

I wanted the port hole glass to look crackled so I first covered a piece of scrap plastic with Multi Medium and let it dry, then added a layer of Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint. If you put the crackle paint on without the base layer of medium it just flakes off when it's dry. Not good! So these are pretty straightforward cards but I love the look of them. Stay tuned for more parts of my mega nautical steampunk Configurations Book project! I'll get it all done hopefully sooner rather than later. ;-)

Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge #31 – Layering Stencil Paint Resist

Boy I've been cutting these challenges really close! Another under the wire for the latest Compendium of Curiosities challenge over at the Studio L3 blog. This time the challenge is to use the Layering Stencil Paint Resist technique as found on page 47 of Tim Holtz's book, A Compendium of Curiosities Vol. 3. I can't believe we are on challenge 31! I used the technique in my little nephew's birthday card. He turned four and is a HUGE Lego Star Wars fan. =)

I used the Karen Burniston Rectangle Accordion Die for the card so there is some fun card action as you open it up:

I love how the panels flip around as you open it. I can't share how the paint resist technique works but it's all over this card! Take a peek at the back too:

Be sure to take a look at the challenge over at Studio L3. There is lots of inspiration there! Also thanks to Inspiration Emporium for sponsoring the prize for challenge #31.
