Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge #11 - Effect Powders

Here we are again with another challenge from Linda at Studio L3! This time we are on page 52 of Tim Holtz's book, Compendium of Curiosities Vol. 3. The technique is to use Distress Embossing Powder to create some great faux effects. Check out the post over at the Studio L3 blog for all the details and great inspiration from the Curiosity Crew. For my project I made a steampunk ATB creation with lots of "Effected" gears! I created it for my son Greg, hence the G on the top. He has become a great fan of steampunk. That's my boy!

For the faux rust technique, you need to see the directions in the Compendium book. For a tutorial on the faux wood technique (yes, that is paper and ink!) see this post for instructions. In the bottom section I used the Eileen Hull Candy Drawer die to make a place for my son to store some treasures. Here are a few close up detail photos:

Thinking of You Card

Hello! I made the following card for a sketch challenge in a Yahoo group that I am a part of (Altered Tattered and Timeworn). I'll also share the technique I used for the background. First, the sketch!


Here is my card I created using it:



I always love using a sewing theme for projects. =) The background is a slight variation on a technique that I learned in the Creative Chemistry 101 online class. First you start out with Specialty Stamping Paper (important!) Using a foam applicator, I swiped on a combination of Scattered Straw and Tea Dye Distress inks. Then, I lightly misted with water the Distressed Damask stamp I was using and stamped the background. I immediately blotted up the water and it lifted the ink as well, creating a ligher image in the background. (See the left half of the picture below.)

 

I then proceeded to stamp the other images on top using a variety of ink colors. In the original technique you do all the stamping first, blend on the background color, and then flick water onto the final image to lift the ink.

I must admit to being a great hoarder of flowers and flower dies. I used my favorite die, Tattered Flower Garland, to cut flowers out of tissue pattern paper.
