St. Patrick's Day with Topflight Stamps

This week at Topflight Stamps our theme is Anything Goes! My Mom's birthday is on St. Patrick's Day so I always make her an appropriately themed card to mark the occasion. This year's features the Grungy Birthday Words stamp from Visible Image and a host of AALL & Create die sets.

I stamped the background with Queen Bee Shimmer Pearl Ink and then embossed it with clear embossing powder. After that, I spritzed the background with Lindy's Rusty Lantern Lime and Steampunk Sepia from the Industrial Chic Starburst Spray Set. When it was all dry, I placed a clean piece of absorbent newsprint paper over the top and ironed it with my craft iron. This melts the embossing powder which wicks into the paper. (You have to peel the paper off quickly or it will stick!) This is a great technique to achieve a faux batik look.

Funkie Junkie Focus – Aren't We Lucky?

Hello there, our current Funkie Junkie Focus theme is "Aren't We Lucky?" Since it is March I decided to go all in with a St. Patrick's Day make. You would count yourself lucky indeed if you found a leprechaun's pot of gold!

This little scene has a vintage saucer for its base (in the perfect shade of green). A Halloween Idea-ology Cauldron is a nice stand in for the 'pot of gold'. The leprechaun's wee little house stands under the shadow of four leaf clovers.

I couldn't resist adding one of the new Salvaged Rabbits to the scene…

Let's take a look at some of the how-to!

Step 1 was to make the pot of gold. I crammed a small styrofoam ball into a cauldron and painted it gold. To make the gold coins, I first cut 3/4" circles out of shrink plastic.

I shrank them with my heat gun so they made nice little coin shapes. Tip: flatten the coins with an acrylic stamp block while the plastic is still hot. I then painted each coin with Gilded Foundry Wax. When the wax dried, I heated each coin again with my heat gun to set the wax. It gets so shiny! (I held the coins in place with tweezers so the heat gun didn't blow them away.)

Step 2 was to form the scene base. I cut a circle of foam core to fit into the saucer. Aluminum foil was molded into the shape I wanted for the base and hot glued in place.

Then I covered the foil with plaster cloth strips. After that was dry I painted it various shades of green and covered it with moss.

Step 3 was making the lucky four leaf clovers. I colored white coffee filters with various colors of Distress Spray Stain. I like to use coffee filters because you can dye them any color you like and they look like tissue paper but are much stronger.

Heart shapes make great clover leaves! The handy thing about using the Hearts Stacked Tiles Die Set is that it comes with multiple dies of the same size. I was able to cut out all the shapes I needed in one pass.

Covered floral wire is perfect for the stems.

With a dab of low temp hot glue, I adhered the first leaf. I added each leaf with another dot of glue and compressed the leaf tips around the stem.

St. Patrick's Day Birthday Card

 Hello, I'm a few days late but I wanted to share my Mom's St. Patrick's Day themed birthday card with you (her birthday is March 17th!) The card is made with all sorts of Tim Holtz products and techniques inspired by his recent YouTube Saturday videos. It's mounted onto a stand cut using Eileen Hull's handy Display Stand Die. This way the card can also serve as a holiday decoration.

I cut the stand out of Sizzix mat board. The front card part I assembled completely before adhering it to the stand. (Layers: base of Woodgrain cardstock, then embossed layer, then Baseboards Lace Frame.

I used a palette of neutrals of various Distress inks, sprays and Crayons to color all the parts (Antique Linen, Pumice Stone, Hickory Smoke, Tea Dye and Vintage Photo).

I cut a multitude of flowers and foliage out of similarly colored cardstock and colored coffee filters. I ended up with a lot of extras so I'll have to make something else with those.

Get Your Green On! Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Hello and welcome to the blog! St. Patrick's Day is always a fun day for us because it is also my mom's birthday. I usually make her a appropriately themed birthday card too and here is the one I made for her this year:

Ann Butler Designs has some new stamp sets out from the Unity Stamp Company. They are strip background builder sets and you can do a lot of neat things with them! Read on to see…

The four leaf clover is cut out of Yupo paper and colored with alcohol inks. I used the Strip stamps and Alcohol Lift-Ink to create the pattern.

To first color my Yupo paper, I dripped various green alcohol inks onto one piece of the Yupo and then smooshed the second piece into all the drips on the first. I squished the ink around between the two pieces and then pulled them apart. I lightly sprinkled a few more drops of one of the green inks on them to get some speckles.

Next I built the Strip stamps into a herringbone pattern on my stamp blog and used Lift-Ink to stamp the pattern into the alcohol ink. Basically you just ink up the stamp, stamp it onto the alcohol inked surface and then buff it with a soft cloth to reveal the stamped pattern. While the lifted ink is still on your rubber stamp, you can also stamp that off onto another piece of paper:

After my initial stamping, I kept stamping with individual strip stamps to continue to build the herringbone pattern:

It was easy to line up the stamps!

I was able to cut two heart "clover leaves" from each sheet of Yupo. I folded them in half so they would have a crease and a bit of dimension. When cutting, I lined up the heart die so the "points" of the herringbone would be in the center of the leaf.

For the background, I first used a brayer to lightly apply white Fresco chalk paint to the kraft cardstock card base. Then I used the strip stamps to stamp a rainbow up the side:

A banner with the gold tinsel embossed sentiment and a gold cord tied around the card fold completed the festive St. Patrick's Day look.

Happy St. Patrick's Day with Eileen Hull's New Gift Box Die

Get your green on because in a week it will be St. Patrick's Day! This is always a special holiday in our family because it's also my Mom's birthday. We will of course have an appropriately themed party for her. I made a new decoration to use in my house utilizing green stuff (of course) and Eileen Hull's new Gift Box Die!

I stamped a wee little green scene all around the sides of the box and filled it with paper shamrocks:

I used lots of Lavinia Stamps from Topflight Stamps as well as luscious Distress Oxide Inks. Take a peek at some of my step photos:

Step 1 - I pulled out all my Lavinia stamps to decide on which ones to use for my scene. The box is cut out of Sizzix Mat board which is the perfect thickness and accepts ink, stains and stamping very well.

Step 2 - I laid down a blended background of Distress Oxide Inks and then stamped with a combination of Archvial inks and Oxide inks. I also embossed the Fern Heads with green embossing powder. The clovers are stamped and fussy cut. I did some light stenciling in the areas of negative space too.

Step 3 - The shamrock leaves are hearts cut out of coffee filters that I dyed with Distress Sprays. I glued a little piece of wire to the back of each heart and then glued/taped the ends to a piece of green floral wire "stem". It's a bit fussy to do but I love how the shamrocks look. There are even a few four leaf ones in the batch! I poked the stems into a block of floral foam that I glued in the bottom of the box.

A St. Patrick's Birthday

My Mom's birthday is on St. Patrick's Day so I often make her a themed card. This year I made her a cheerful "crazy" card using Karen Burniston's Rectangle Pull Card die. I love her designs! The dies make it so easy to create cards that flip, pop, and otherwise rock in a fun interactive way. This one lets you add a fun spinner element that pops up at you when you open the card.

The card is held closed by tucking he leading fold under the little tab. When you pull on the ends of the card, it opens up and the rainbow pops up into place!

The background of the card is created from blended Distress Oxide Inks (still having lots of fun playing with these!) Of course the Tim Holtz Crazy Collection is always good for creating a humorous card. I love these birds! I added lots of cheerful and colorful diecut flowers with Souffle Pen detailing.

My Mom loved  her card and now I can share it here online because we celebrated her birthday this evening. =) Thanks for stopping by for a look!
