UFO Projects with Eileen Hull – Felt Journal

In case you don't know what a UFO project is, it means an UnFinished Object! I do have several unfinished projects laying around lol. I decided to complete an embroidered felt journal cover I made in… 2022 ha ha. (You can check it out here.) The cover was done but I hadn't made anything to put inside.

I saw an intriguing binding method on Sea Lemon's YouTube channel single page binding, perfect for thick pages/papers that won't bend into signatures. I wanted to try it out so I cut the pages out of Sizzix Mat Board.

I pulled out my collection of PaperArtsy Lynne Perrella stamp sets to use for all the focal images. I also used Eileen's Fan Favorites Stamp Set throughout the pages.

New Sizzix Classics Die Release from Eileen Hull!

Eileen Hull is now off on her UK Papercrafting adventure and we are also celebrating another Sizzix Classics die release. Three favorite retired designs have been brought back for your crafting pleasure! They are the Notebook Die, the Stacking Drawer Box Die and the Treasure Box Die. The Notebook and Drawers all fit perfectly into the Treasure Box so you can mix and match them together for all sorts of project combinations.

I made new projects to share using these dies and am highlighting an embroidered stitchery project today.

I used the Notebook Die to cut a cover out of wool felt which I then embellished with antique lace, beads and felt flowers. (Flowers cut using the Envelope, Folder & Flowers Die Set.)

Inside I added a pocket cut using the Folio Page, Pocket & Flowers Die Set plus Tim Holtz Idea-ology ephemera and bits.

Embroidered Needle Book with Eileen Hull Dies

Hello Eileen Hull fans! At the beginning of the January, Eileen released some Classic Sizzix die designs that were brought back due to popular demand. (If you missed the Release Party, you can watch the replay here.) The Inspiration Team had a lot of fun revisiting these old favorites and we've been sharing tutorials for our projects. Here is a closer look at one of mine featuring the Scoreboards Needle Book Die.

I cut the cover out of thick felt and added embroidered accents. I also used some of my mixed media "stamps" stash I made back in June. Perfect!

Eileen Hull's January Sizzix Release 2024!

Welcome to the Sizzix 2024 January Release Party of Eileen Hull's newest die collection! We are celebrating with a Live party and this Blog Hop. Eileen's Teams have been hard at work creating with Eileen's new products and have quite a lineup of inspiration for you. Here is what Eileen has to say,

"You asked for it – we did it! The Classic Cantilever Sewing Box, Embroidery Hoop and Needle Book dies have been brought back because you asked. These dies all relate to stitching but of course may also be used in other ways. They are all Bigz dies which are so versatile because of the number of materials that may be cut with them.

I have fond memories of my Mom’s wooden sewing box and designed this Cantilever Sewing Box to replicate that. It’s great for storing sewing supplies like needles, thread, buttons, floss and pins- but it also works for hair bands and clips, small storage items, jewelry, desk organization and small treats. Use the drawers separately to organize your desk drawers or create a shadowbox – so many ways to use! Finished size is 3 1/2" x 6 1/4" x 2 1/4".

The Embroidery Hoop measures 4" and is designed to be cut from thick material such as matboard or chipboard. You can actually tuck thin fabrics in the hoop and stitch on them. Or you can die cut from paper and use the hoop on card fronts. Use the pieces separately or all together.

The Needle Book is also a ScoreBoard die and features a pretty scalloped edge to the book. It measures 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 1/2" and is perfect for storing your stitching needles and pins – works great when made from felt! But it can also be made from matboard, chipboard, leather or fabric – one of the benefits of the Bigz dies.

Please join us for the It’s All about Stitching Release Party that will be held on Tuesday, January 2nd at noon Eastern time on my YouTube, Facebook and Instagram pages. The team and I will be sharing creative ways to use these dies – we can’t wait to share them with you! There will be giveaways so make sure to tune in and see how to enter to win!"

The New Collection:

The team has been busy creating lots of samples so please make sure to visit the Blog Hop post on Eileen's blog and be watching social media to see their makes! There's a giveaway too! Comment in the Facebook and YouTube streams and tell us which is your new favorite die or folder and what you would make with it. You have until July 8th to post your comments.

Here's a look at some of the projects I made using Eileen's new dies. Tutorials will be coming up later in the month…

Using the Cantilever Sewing Box Die, I created a cheerful floral box for keeping those special objects in.

Felt, Fibers and Fabric Journal Cover

All during the month of March Eileen Hull's design teams have been playing with using felt, fibers and fabric with her dies to create projects to inspire you! Here I am finally at the very end of March with my contribution. I used the Book Box Die to make a journal cover. The die cut easily through thick felt to form the base and I appliqued wool shapes to it.

I embellished the cover with LOTS of embroidery! I had fun exploring a stitchery book from Sue Spargo that I had received for Christmas. I tried many new stitches.

So far this is only the cover so it's officially a work in progress. Hopefully the WIP doesn't become a UFO and I get it finished sooner rather than later!

I lined the inside covers with grey Sizzix Texture Roll that I had printed on with my Gel Press.

When I make the insides I'll add a piece of mat board for the spine and bind the pages to it.

Let's take a look at some of the how-to…

Step 1 - I cut the base pieces out of a thick felt and played around with circle shapes until I was happy with the pattern. I also chose the wool plaid fabrics I thought would work together.

Step 2 - I ironed Pellon Fusible Featherweight Interfacing onto the backs of the wool fabric before I cut out the circle shapes. It helped to stabilize the fabric and keep the edges from fraying.

Step 3 - It's so much fun to pick fabrics. =)

Step 4 - I basted the sections in place to keep them all sorted and where they were supposed to be. Then the real fun began and got stitching!

Step 5 - Fast forward…

After many long happy hours of embroidery I had completed the stitching and was ready to assemble the cover.

Step 6 - On the inside of the cover I whip stitched the edges of the spine piece to the front and back covers (there is about a quarter inch of overlap). This was to help reinforce the join and hold it in place while I sewed the "fancy" stitches from the front.

Step 7 - I stitched along the edges of the spine part with a blanket stitch for decoration and to further join the cover pieces together. The last step was to stitch the Texture Roll pieces into the inside covers. I whip stitched them into place which also finished off the edges nicely.

Thanks for stopping by! Hopefully I'll be back soonish with the interior done. ;-)

Embroidered Folio Journal with Stitchery Kit - Eileen Hull's New Sizzix Dies!

Well, it's taken me all month but I finally finished my embroidered Folio Journal! Eileen's new Folio has SO many possibilities! I wanted to try making a "soft" journal sewn out of fabric and Pellon Ultra Firm Stabilizer. It worked! Take a look…

Lisa Hoel for Eileen Hull - embroidery Folio Journal #eileenhull #eileenhulldesigns #eileenhullsizzix #ehinspirationteam #eheducators #Sizzix #mymakingstory #diecutting
I had the perfect piece of vintage lace to use on the cover!

The Folio pockets hold thread cards and a needle book.

I used vintage tea towel embroidery patterns to stitch my pages:

Here's a better look at the 'pocket parts'.

Let's check out the construction:

Step 1 - For the covers, first I cut two pieces of the Pellon Stabilizer (14" x 6") and fused my outside and inside printed fabrics onto each side. (Forgot to get a photo of that.) I then cut my front and back covers.

Note the piece of lace I had in my stash that
was the perfect size!

At this stage, I also raided by button stash and sewed vintage buttons onto the lace.

Step 2 - I sewed the covers together at the spine, stitching back and forth several times for strength.

Next I zig-zag stitched around the edges to give it a more finished look and to make sure the fabric wouldn't fray on the edgers. I also stitched one side of the pocket bottom pieces into place.

Step 3 – I had to stop and ponder the proper order of the next steps. ;-) First I attached the ring binder hardware, and then the lace (which would have been in the way of stitching the binder clip). I knew it would be easier to tack on the lace with stitches before the pockets were folded over and sewn so that's why the lace was next.

I used strong thread and hand tacked the clip into place
with several stitches.

Step 4 – Now I could sew the pocket bottoms in place. I used a strip of super tacky tape to help hold the tab in place while I hand stitched it.

Stitching the edge was a bit tricky. I definitely needed a sharp needle and a thimble to get through all those layers. Not bad for a first effort though.

PART 2: The embroidered pages

Step 1 – I found these vintage iron on tea towel patterns at the thrift store.

I actually scanned the patterns I wanted to use so I could size them to fit on the pages. I wasn't sure if the old iron transfer ink would still work anyway. However sizing in my computer worked perfectly. I printed out the pattern and used a light box and a FriXion pen to trace the patterns onto the fabric. The pen has heat sensitive ink so for a final step I lightly passed my iron over the finished pages to make the black pen marks disappear like magic!

Here are all my finished embroideries, ready to be
made into pages.

Step 2 – I used the page die from the Folio Page, Pocket & Flowers Die Set to trace out where the page edges should go on all the stitched panels. I did some careful pinning and made a sandwich of panels with quilt batting in the middle, then stitched around the page about 1/8" in. After that I trimmed the pages on the pen lines with my pinking shears.

Step 3 – Last step was to put eyelets in. It was super easy using my Crop-A-Dile. I even had the right size eyelets in my stash!

I guess the last, last steps were to make the matching needle book (see a similar one I made here) and the thread cards. The thread cards were cut from mat board using Eileen's Trinket Box Die front. Tip for the bunnies: I cut them out of Sizzix Surfacez White Texture Roll. It is a very durable fabric type paper like the old Paper Leather or Kraftex. I did this so the bunny arms wouldn't rip off when winding and unwinding floss around the cards.
