Hello there and happy summer! It's officially upon us now. =) All month-long Eileen's Inspiration Team has been sharing ways to use Crescent products like RENDR paper and Photo Mat Art Boards with her Sizzix die collections. I used the new Crescent multi-media 8x10 Photo Mat Art Board to create a decor piece that speaks of summer adventures:

We just got back from a camping trip so I'm in the great outdoors groove now (and didn't get too many bug bites ha ha.) This projects isn't as complex as it looks! Let's see how it came together:

I started by spraying the heavy duty Photo Mat Art Board with a DecoArt Media Mister in Primary Cyan. These misters are intensely colored and permanent when dry. Perfect for a nighttime sky! I was a bit stumped by the stars because I didn't have a stencil, die or stamp that was right. However, I did have the perfect embossing folder. I used it as a stamp!

I carefully inked the stars with the Versamark pad by rubbing it across the one side of the embossing folder. Try to just ink the surface of the stars. I turned it over and positioned it on my Photo Mat and then used the brayer to transfer the ink with a fair amount of pressure. Hold the folder down firmly while you are doing this so it doesn't shift! I then sprinkled on gold embossing powder and embossed it. It worked wonderfully and I was able to create a field of stars in the sky.

Next I decorated the front with various Sizzix diecuts to complete the foreground forest scene.

After that I built the shadowbox to fit behind the Photo Mat Board opening. I made it a bit bigger than the opening and cut the parts out of foamcore board.

The background for the box I stamped and inked before cutting it out and folding it. I then glued it into the box after checking the fit.

I added a trailer from Eileen's Travel Trailer Thinlits die set and some grass cut using her Grass die to complete the scene. I'm thinking I should have made a little campfire too! I glued the shadowbox behind the mat opening and added an easel stand cut out of chipboard so the whole thing would stand up on its own.

The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge Blog – Happy Anniversary!

The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge Blog is turning two this month! We're going to celebrate by letting you choose your favorite theme from last year to use as your project challenge! Head on over to the blog challenge post to see all the inspiration! (After you see my project though – don't go yet!)

I chose to base my project on MMMC #20, Time Flies, with a focus on the flying part. I created this for a friend who loves all things vintage and especially with a bird theme.

The base is a canvas board that I covered with an image transfer from a piece of scrapbooking paper. (See this video from Finnabair to see how to use Art Basics Soft Matte Gel to do a transfer.) Then I raided my stash of vintage hankies and lace bits to pick out various samples to make into a collage of sorts for the background. I sewed it all together and then glued it to the canvas base using Art Basics 3D Gloss Gel (awesome as a glue!!)

The bird graphic is a free download from the Graphics Fairy website and I used a different transfer method to put it onto a piece of smooth muslin. I discovered this material called TAP Transfer Artist Paper and it is easy to use and looks really sharp! I'm looking forward to playing around more with it. You can run it through your inkjet printer and then transfer the image to all sorts of surfaces using your iron. Anyway, I transferred it to muslin and then die cut it and a piece of quilt batting to shape. I stitched them together and adhered it to the rest of the collage. Some vintage buttons and flowers finished it off and of course a favorite (and appropriate!) Bible verse gives the whole piece meaning.
