More Eileen Hull Wrapped Journals!

The Wrapped Journal frenzy continues! Eileen Hull's newest journal die is sure to please and after our long, impatient wait is finally appearing in stores. Her Inspiration Team is sharing journal and other projects all month long that utilize her new Book Club Chapter 2 Collection of which the Wrapped Journal is a cornerstone. Eileen Hull is also the sponsor this month over at Mixed Media Monthly and she sent some Wrapped Journal die cuts to the MMM Design Team and they had lots of fun with those! Inspiration abounds! Step 1 – I collaged Monopoly money onto the outside of the journal cover.

I also lightly brayered chalk paint over the cover…

…and the inside cover:

Step 2 – I used stencils to add further layers to the front and inside covers. Some were just plain ink and other parts I also embossed with embossing powder.

Step 3 – I used elastic for the binding so I could easily slip the signatures underneath the straps.

The Final Mixed Media Monthly Challenge - Wrap it Up

Sadly, this will be the final challenge of Mixed Media Monthly. However we are "Wrapping it Up" in style! Our sponsor this month is Eileen Hull and she sent each design team member a cut of her brand new die, the Wrapped Journal. The results were pretty spectacular so be sure to check out the main post and see. More will be revealed on our June 15th mid-month post as well. ;-)

I'm still feeling like I'm in spring mode around here so I created my journal using spring colors, floral stamps and an embossed butterfly die cut:

Fastens with a velcro closure under the front piece.

Step 1 – I blended Oxide inks all over the front side of the journal and used the Harlequin stencil over it in places too. Then I lightly sprinkled it with water to activate the Oxide ink.

I also stamped on the cover afterwards using Twisted Citron Oxide Ink.

Step 2 – I used Twisted Citron Distress Spray Stain for the inside of the cover. I also stamped on it when it was dry.

Step 3 – The inserts are mini composition books I bought at the Dollar Tree store. They are the perfect size! I covered them with patterned paper and some stamping.

Step 4 – Using elastic for the binding makes it really easy to put the inserts in. Thread the elastic through the holes, pull it tight and tie it off. Then just slide the inserts under each elastic strap.

Mid-Month May Inspiration for Mixed Media Monthly

Hello there everyone! Our "Rust" challenge for Mixed Media Monthly is ongoing and we want to see your rusty projects! The sponsor for May, Emerald Creek, is giving away a gift pack of their unique embossing powders to a lucky winner. Don't miss out…

For my project I created a card with a faux rusty background and die cut flowers embossed with several varieties of Emerald Creek embossing powders.

The background is embossed multi-media paper stock that I smeared with Distress Paint (Ripe Persimmon, Gathered Twigs, Aged Mahogany, and Vintage Photo) and then misted with water so it would marble together and mimic the look of rust.

The flowers I cut out of plain cardstock and then embossed with the various powders. It was easy to use the Emboss It Dabber to apply ink to the cut flowers and then sprinkle with powder.

Also, over at Eileen Hull's blog, the theme this month is 'May Flowers'! All of the flowers are cut using some of Eileen's flower dies. They are so versatile! Head on over to check out the flowery inspiration the team is sharing all month long.

May Challenge at Mixed Media Monthly!

Good morning and happy May! April showers bring… rust? Ha ha, it just might. ;-) We want to see projects using rusty colors, faux rust techniques, rust mediums – any or all of the above. You can see all the details and projects from the design team on the Mixed Media Monthly challenge post.

Our sponsor this month is Emerald Creek, creator of unique embossing powders and other cool crafty supplies. They very kindly sent some of their embossing powders, including the Baked Texture powder Chunky Rust, to the design team so we could give them a try on our projects.

I created a junk journal with Eileen Hull's Journal Die to hold my collection of art mail I've received from all my ATC trading.

The focal image is a stamp from a Lynne Perrella set from Paper Artsy. I stamped it on Mixed Media Heavystock, watercolored it, and then embossed layers of Vintage Beeswax powder over the top. It's mounted on a cardstock tag that I covered with metal foil tape and distressed with paint and Chunky Rust embossing powder.

I covered mat board with adhesive backed cloth paper and then cut the covers out of it with the Journal Die. After that I used a brayer to apply a bit of Fresco paint to the covers and also used the paint to stencil. When the paint was dry I used various Distress Spray Stains to spritz all over the front and then stamped with archival ink.

My "flyleaf envelope" has Viva Rusty Paper paint on it with a stenciled
design over it embossed with Ancient Amber powder. 

I love all the bright envelopes. Happy mail indeed!

Here's a bit more "how to"…

Inside covers with elastic binding.

I knew my art envelopes were going to be bulky (and I have a large stack of them!) so I made this journal extra thick. Normally you overlap part of the spine and glue it so you can have either two or three signatures fastened into the cover. I butted the spine edges together and glued an extra piece of mat board I had cut over the inside of the spine to hold it all together. I then used my Crop-o-dile tool to punch through the extra mat board piece so I could string my elastic binding to hold four signatures.

I made four "stubby" signatures of six sheets of light cardstock each. They slide easily under the elastic binding.

I used a "stubby" page as a tab to slide into each envelope (a little glue kept the envelope in place). I just used pointy scissors to trim down each page to fit into the envelope if it was a smaller one. I actually ended up not using one of my signatures in the middle because the whole journal was getting so fat! I was still able to incorporate many of my art envies though.

Mid-Month Inspiration for the Mixed Media Monthly Color Wheel Challenge

Hello, I'm back with another project for our April Color Wheel Challenge over at Mixed Media Monthly! It's not too late for you to join in. We've had some really cool projects entered!

(Create a mixed media project using predominantly one Complimentary or Split Complimentary Color Scheme. Be sure to tell us what you used.)

Here is a color wheel for you to reference. A Complimentary Pair is two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. A Split Complement is one color plus the two colors adjacent to its complement across the wheel. (For example, Red + Yellow-Green & Blue-Green.)

For my mid-month project I've chosen to use the complementary pair of Red-Orange and Blue-Green (one of my favorites!)

I used Eileen Hull's new Trinket Box die to create this little 'jewel box'. The top is marbled Distress Paint (Mermaid Lagoon, Peacock Feathers, Pine Needles, Ripe Persimmon) and the label die cut from the Journal Die just happens to fit perfectly into he oval cutout on the lid. (I love it when stuff like that happens!)

The sides I painted with Viva Rusty Paper Paint and various other paints and crackle mediums. I wanted a range of rusty red-orange colors. I also had the perfect piece of bling to add to the top from my stash of broken jewelry. The colors are perfect!
