Mermaid Card with Topflight Stamps

Happy Saturday y'all! If you participated in the recent 4th Birthday Blog Hop Celebration with Topflight Stamps, then you probably got a peek at the mermaid birthday card I'm going to share with you today. My sister-in-law loves mermaids so I always have fun making her a themed card each year. I also have a short tutorial at the end for the background I made using PaperArtsy Fresco Paints. It's easy and looks really cool!

Here's the card:

Lisa Hoel for Topflight Stamps - mermaid birthday card using Pink Ink Designs and Lavinia stamps

I made it an accordion type folded card so you could extend the whole scene when you opened it up.

Lisa Hoel for Topflight Stamps - mermaid birthday card using Pink Ink Designs and Lavinia stamps

The stamps used are from Pink Ink Designs and Lavinia and they play very well together! (See supply list for exact stamps.) I used twinkling metallic watercolor paints to color the mermaids. They are very glimmery!

The background is created using PaperArtsy Fresco Paints. These chalk acrylic paints dry with a matte surface and are perfect for stamping and inking on top of.

Step 1 – Using a brayer and three different colors of paint, I covered the cardstock in a patchy manner so there would be color variation.

Step 2 – I used the Lavinia Coral stencil to monoprint on top of the background. First I squeezed some paint onto my craft sheet and then brayered it out into a thin layer. I then misted it with water so it would be "soppier" and give me the watery effect I wanted. I lightly applied this paint to the back of the stencil with the brayer and then flipped it over onto the background. I pressed it down with a paper towel to transfer the paint and soak up any extra that squished out.

I did that a few times on the background and also on the card envelope.

Once I was done, I went ahead with my stamping and painting. I did use a stamping platform for more control.

I used Eileen's new Waterfall die to cut flaps so I could
layer photos on a single tag. The die made it really easy!

Speaking of easy, the 3-D Camper Die is easy to put together and has so many possibilities!

Step 1 – Cut out the pieces from matboard or chipboard. You will need to cut two sets of the camper sides, two sets of wheels, one bottom panel and two of the "ends" for the bottom panel. I used Eileen's Molten Dimensions Aqua Splash embossing powder to cover the decorative panels on the camper sides. I also ran the main body parts through an embossing folder to give them some ridged texture.

Here you can see I've glued the two end parts to the bottom panel.

Step 2 – I glued all the decorative parts to the camper sides. I also applied a little of Sizzix's new Silver Luster Wax to the raised parts of the embossed sides. It gives it a nice little shine! I also glued the bottom assembly to the back. Once it was dry, I glued on the front and then the tires.

Step 3 – the base is a Tim Holtz Vignette box I covered with paper. You can also see that I covered the camper tires with Molten Dimensions embossing powder Black Magic and Polished Silver. (I did that before I glued them on.)

Step 4 – making the tag album. This took awhile lol! The construction is simple though. I cut many many tags and connected them together with washi tape hinges on both sides. I added a bit of glue under the tape so it would hold better. (I don't trust the washi adhesive on its own.) You can make the album as small or as big as you like, just keep adding tags. ;-)

See, easy peasy! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy the Hop!

Happy Easter! Vintage + Eileen Hull Sizzix Dies

Happy Easter and springtime friends! Today I have a cute spring decor piece to share with you made with some of my favorite things. I really need to put away my St. Patrick's Day decor and get all the Easter stuff out! Let's take a look:

Lisa Hoel for Eileen Hull - Easter decor, vintage Lefton duckling and pretty die cut flowers

The lantern I found at the thrift store (I'm always keeping my eyes open for things I can create scenes in). The little Lefton duckling figurine is one I had in my stash. The flowers are created using Eileen's dies and her Sizzix Twist & Style Tool (more on how I did those later).

Detail of the top (the crochet lace is vintage):

and, the back view:

This really didn't take too long to put together. Following are some tips for making the flowers.

Step 1 - I carved a foam base to fit in the bottom and hot glued it in place. I covered it with fake moss from the craft store (not shown in photo below).

Step 2 - Making flowers
I gathered my 'flower' material, patterned paper, dyed crinoline and dyed coffee filters. I cut several combinations of materials using the Heart & Soul Flower die. The stems are very easy to create using wire, buttons and Eileen's Twist & Style tool!

Cut a length of wire, double it over and put it through the button center.

The 'holder' part of the tool has a suction cup that sticks to a smooth surface like my glass craft mat. The ends of the wire can attach to either end of the tool. Shown is the end with a hole you insert the wire into and tighten the screw to hold it in place. The other end is just a hook you can twist the wire around.

Hold one of the handles and twist! That's it. Keep twisting until you are happy with the tightness of your twisted wire. Disengage the tool and poke the stem through the center of your flowers. Add a dab of glue to keep everything in place and you have a flower. Easy peasy!

The second type of flowers I cut using purple dyed coffee filters and the Pansy Flower Die. I had these wired bundles of pink stamens in my stash (probably from the thrift store lol) that were perfect for the centers. I used several layers of the die cut petals and crinkled them up for dimension. Again, a dab of glue held the petals in place.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my post. Be sure to keep an eye on Eileen's blog because April 7th is the Release Party for her Chapter 2 Sizzix Dies!

Embroidered Folio Journal with Stitchery Kit - Eileen Hull's New Sizzix Dies!

Well, it's taken me all month but I finally finished my embroidered Folio Journal! Eileen's new Folio has SO many possibilities! I wanted to try making a "soft" journal sewn out of fabric and Pellon Ultra Firm Stabilizer. It worked! Take a look…

Lisa Hoel for Eileen Hull - embroidery Folio Journal #eileenhull #eileenhulldesigns #eileenhullsizzix #ehinspirationteam #eheducators #Sizzix #mymakingstory #diecutting
I had the perfect piece of vintage lace to use on the cover!

The Folio pockets hold thread cards and a needle book.

I used vintage tea towel embroidery patterns to stitch my pages:

Here's a better look at the 'pocket parts'.

Let's check out the construction:

Step 1 - For the covers, first I cut two pieces of the Pellon Stabilizer (14" x 6") and fused my outside and inside printed fabrics onto each side. (Forgot to get a photo of that.) I then cut my front and back covers.

Note the piece of lace I had in my stash that
was the perfect size!

At this stage, I also raided by button stash and sewed vintage buttons onto the lace.

Step 2 - I sewed the covers together at the spine, stitching back and forth several times for strength.

Next I zig-zag stitched around the edges to give it a more finished look and to make sure the fabric wouldn't fray on the edgers. I also stitched one side of the pocket bottom pieces into place.

Step 3 – I had to stop and ponder the proper order of the next steps. ;-) First I attached the ring binder hardware, and then the lace (which would have been in the way of stitching the binder clip). I knew it would be easier to tack on the lace with stitches before the pockets were folded over and sewn so that's why the lace was next.

I used strong thread and hand tacked the clip into place
with several stitches.

Step 4 – Now I could sew the pocket bottoms in place. I used a strip of super tacky tape to help hold the tab in place while I hand stitched it.

Stitching the edge was a bit tricky. I definitely needed a sharp needle and a thimble to get through all those layers. Not bad for a first effort though.

PART 2: The embroidered pages

Step 1 – I found these vintage iron on tea towel patterns at the thrift store.

I actually scanned the patterns I wanted to use so I could size them to fit on the pages. I wasn't sure if the old iron transfer ink would still work anyway. However sizing in my computer worked perfectly. I printed out the pattern and used a light box and a FriXion pen to trace the patterns onto the fabric. The pen has heat sensitive ink so for a final step I lightly passed my iron over the finished pages to make the black pen marks disappear like magic!

Here are all my finished embroideries, ready to be
made into pages.

Step 2 – I used the page die from the Folio Page, Pocket & Flowers Die Set to trace out where the page edges should go on all the stitched panels. I did some careful pinning and made a sandwich of panels with quilt batting in the middle, then stitched around the page about 1/8" in. After that I trimmed the pages on the pen lines with my pinking shears.

Step 3 – Last step was to put eyelets in. It was super easy using my Crop-A-Dile. I even had the right size eyelets in my stash!

I guess the last, last steps were to make the matching needle book (see a similar one I made here) and the thread cards. The thread cards were cut from mat board using Eileen's Trinket Box Die front. Tip for the bunnies: I cut them out of Sizzix Surfacez White Texture Roll. It is a very durable fabric type paper like the old Paper Leather or Kraftex. I did this so the bunny arms wouldn't rip off when winding and unwinding floss around the cards.
