Eileen Hull Stacking Drawer Die Inspiration

Hello there! For the month of September, Eileen Hull's Inspiration Team has been working with the theme, "Top Drawer Inspiration" and making creations using the Stacking Drawer Die (which fits perfectly into the Treasure Box by the way.) It is definitely a very versatile die you'll want in your crafty toolbox!

I'm in full on fall mode now so I was inspired to create a cute autumn themed decoration.

I love how you can configure single drawers in so many different ways. I stacked three of them up to create this little "dresser".

I cut an extra piece of matboard to fit around the three drawers for a neater finish and to give it more stability.

Top view! I raided my stash of little bits and figurines to decorate the top. Also included are some leaf die cuts.

This was pretty easy to put together. See below for some tips!

1) Here are the pieces to build three drawers. The drawers fit tightly in the sleeves. I like to cut a little sliver off the top edge of the drawer piece while it is still flat. Also, glue the drawer bottom inside the drawer and don't stick it on the bottom.

2) Here's the extra piece I hand cut to wrap around the sleeve part. I made my own score lines by cutting partway through the matboard.

This month we are celebrating another Sizzix Classics die release. Three favorite retired designs have been brought back for your crafting pleasure! They are the Notebook Die, the Stacking Drawer Box Die and the Treasure Box Die. The Notebook and Drawers all fit perfectly into the Treasure Box so you can mix and match them together for all sorts of project combinations. This week I'm sharing a project combo using the Treasure Box and Stacking Drawer dies:

I made a desk set that holds post-its, paper clips, and a mini book.

I decorated the outside with Faux Postage & ephemera.

The drawers hold all the little goodies!

Notebook is made with the Mini Book Die.

Here is a look at how it went together:

1) I covered the mat board with Tim Holtz patterned paper before cutting out all the pieces for the Treasure Box.

2) I find the drawers fit better into the outer sleeve when the bottom is glued inside of the drawer. Otherwise it's a tight fit!

3) I cut the hinges out of Sizzix Surfacez Texture Roll. It's like a combination of paper and fabric so it is very flexible and sturdy.

Treasure Box Nature Journal Part 2!

Hello again! This month on Eileen Hull's blog the Teams are creating Nature Journals to share with you all. Last week I shared Part 1 of my Treasure Box Die project and I'm back this week with a look at the mini accordion fold journal that fits into the lid.

Then it unfolds into one long stamped collage. I had quite the stack of Tim Holtz stamps and inks spread all over the place as I was making the insides!

I used the same patterned paper I lined the drawer with for the back cover.

The construction of the journal was easy. I first used the 'swipe and smoosh' technique with Antique Linen Spray Stain on my craft mat to lay down some base texture and distressing on the cardstock for the pages. Then I cut strips 4.5" x 11" out of each page.

I scored the folds at 2.75" intervals. Before folding I did all my stamping and inking.

I joined the paper strip sections together with Tissue Tape on both sides of the seam. Also, I glued it down with Collage Medium for extra strength. Once the whole strip was done, I folded it up into an accordion and attached the covers.

It's Nature Journals for September!

Hello everyone. A new month means a new theme in Eileen Hull blogland. I am so happy it is September and we have a great theme – Nature. In addition, her Teams have been challenged to create journals with dies that aren't officially "journal" dies. Challenge accepted! As usual my project got rather involved so this week is Part 1 of this project. ;-)

I started off with Eileen's Treasure Box Die for the main structure. (I believe that this die has been discontinued so get it while you can!)

What do we see when we open the box?

The journal itself is tied into the cover. You'll get to see all the details of that next week in Part 2! On the right is a little nature vignette and a drawer (the Stacking Drawer Die) to hold little bits and "specimens".

Here is a quick look at some of the "putting it together" steps.

1) All the parts laid out - I colored the 'outside' side of the matboard pieces with Distress Spray Stain in Speckled Egg, Iced Spruce,Tea Dye, Antique Linen and Oxide Speckled Egg and Antique Linen. The 'inside' side was colored with Twisted Citron, Peeled Paint, Antique Linen, Old Paper, Tea Dye and Oxide Antique Linen.

2) I did all the stamping before assembly of course. I find it helps to lay the pieces out as they will be glued together to help me visualize how to add the imagery. I did the same on the reverse, "inside" pieces but forgot to take photos. oops!

I also had to account for where the openings in the birch trees wrap would fall. Lots of fiddling around! (I also did all the "inside" inking and stamping before assembling the box as well.)

3) Once the elements were in place, I assembled the box. (The die cut birch layer was glued in place after I assembled the box base.)

A look at the inside - The drawer has a lesser depth than the box so you can decide where you want to glue it. I moved it all the way forward and then glued an extra piece of mat board over the gap in the back.

4) Glazing the mushrooms - It's easy to change the color of the Tiny Toadstools. I used Crackling Campfire Distress Glaze by coating the mushroom tops with Collage Medium and then sprinkling with the embossing powder. Once the glue was dry, I hit it with the embossing gun to melt the powder. Spots were added afterwards with acrylic paint.

"Chocolate" for Your Valentine with Eileen Hull

Have you seen Eileen Hull's NEW SIZZIX DIES? You are going to love them which is quite appropriate for this month of February! (Also, another new die that will come out in April is the Notebook die, which also fits neatly inside of the Treasure Box.)

Today I'm sharing a Valentine gift box I made with the Stacking Drawer Die. The die will cut the parts for one drawer and you can then make as many as you want and stack them in whatever way you want. Handily, they can fit inside of the Treasure Box. I have just used a single drawer for this 'tasty' project:

Hmmm… what's inside?

I thought it would be fun to make the treat box look like a giant piece of chocolate. The drawers are very easy to put together and the possibilities are endless!

Step 1
I ran my patterned liner paper and the brown 'chocolate' paper through my Xyron machine to apply adhesive to the backs. That makes it really easy to stick it onto the Sizzix mat board sheet.

Step 2
I die cut the drawer pieces out of my board (after adhering the papers). The outside (brown side) faced down onto the die. The shiny brown paper was a bit on the thick side so to reduce bulk, I carefully peeled it off of the tab sections of the drawer. The drawer is sized to fit snugly into the outer sleeve. If you find it is a bit too tight for your liking, trim a small sliver off the top of your drawer piece before you assemble it. I find with a cork backed metal ruler and a nice sharp blade in your craft knife it is easy.

Step 3
All you have to do to assemble it is fold it up and glue it together. Super tape (the red kind) also works well but I like to use a quick grabbing wet glue because then I have a few moments of play time to position the pieces just right before they stick.

After gluing the side drawer tab in place, you glue the bottom of the drawer inside on top of the bottom tabs. If you glue it underneath the tabs your drawer will be way too tall to fit into the sleeve.

Once I had my drawer all assembled, I used some white Enamel Accents from Ranger to make the 'icing' design on top of my piece of chocolate.

NEW! Stacking Drawer Die from Eileen Hull

Hello! Did you see all the fun that happened at Creativation 2019? I was so happy to be able to go this year and it was an exciting time for sure! Lots to see and do. Of course when I came home my son infected the whole family with evil germs and we were all sick for a week. We're finally coming out of it and I'm trying to get caught up! First off it is now time to share my projects made with Eileen Hull's NEW SIZZIX DIES! You are going to love them! (Also, another new die that will come out in April is the Notebook die, which also fits neatly inside of the Treasure Box.)

I'm sharing today the show project I made with the Stacking Drawer Die. The die will cut the parts for one drawer and you can then make as many as you want and stack them in whatever way you want. Handily, they can fit inside of the Treasure Box.

How to:

Step 1 – I did all the inking, stamping and embossing on the drawers while they were still flat. They were cut out of matboard scraps so one side was mermaid pink and the other was white. First I added some white Fresco paint with a brayer to the pink sides to tone it down and give it some visual texture.

The drawers are made to fit very snugly in the sleeves so if you want a looser fit, now is a good stage to carefully cut a sliver of board off of the top edge of the drawer strip with a sharp craft knife.

I painted the insides of the drawers blue and then stenciled and embossed on top. I tried to keep any embossing away from the edges that had tabs to be glued so there wouldn't be the bulk of embossing powder in the seams.

When assembling the drawers, glue the sides together first (top left corner above) and then glue the bottom inside (top right corner above). If you glue the drawer bottom underneath the drawer tabs, it will be too tall and for sure won't fit in the drawer sleeve.

Step 2 – Assemble the sleeves (forgot to take a photo of this part, oops! It's easy though, just a diecut strip that folds up and glues on one side to make an enclosure for the drawer to fit into. I stacked and glued three of them together. I also turned my drawers 'backwards' because I was adding knobs and didn't want the pull out notches to show. It is up to you how to position them.

Step 3 – Because I didn't have the Treasure Box die in hand at the time and had already used the box cut that Eileen sent me for another project, I had to make my own 'enclosure' for the stack of drawers. Otherwise it would have been easy to use the bottom of the Treasure Box, cutting it flush to the depth of my stack, to house the drawers. But it wasn't difficult to hand cut the pieces I needed.

I inked them up with Distress Oxide inks and used Blending Brushes to stencil on the mermaid. I figured out where the design would overlap onto adjoining panels and inked accordingly. I embellished the stamping and stenciling with some gel pen line work too.
